A Crate Tutorial

The past few days have been drizzly, overcast, stay-in kind of days.  I've had no excuse not to get some indoor projects finished.

I found this crate at a resale shop last summer.  The top and bottom of the crate was in bad shape, but there was something wonderful about its shabbiness.  I've found that you either love that shabbiness or don't understand it.  There's no in-between!

But this had potential!  Shabby cuteness!  I know, cover the top with sheet music!  I learned a few tricks when I did the sheet music dresser.

I haven't figured out why I need to pay twice the money to buy Mod Podge when white glue will do.  I just put some glue in a bowl with a little bit of water and stirred it up.  I used a sponge brush to "paint" on a coat of glue to both the crate top and the back of the sheet music.  My puppy, Rowdy, seems to approve.

I thought about putting casters on the bottom, but at $8 each, I decided there had to be a better idea.

There was!  Found these cute little legs at Lowe's for less than $2 each!

So I gave them a coat of ASCP Old White, and finished them off with a coat of clear wax and dark wax.

Now if you've never put legs on something before, it's really pretty ease.  When you buy your legs, buy these brackets, too.  They're less than $2 and you just screw them onto the bottom of your project.

The legs already have screws embedded and you just screw them into the bracket.

So what did I end up with?  How 'bout a side table!

That ugly crate cleaned up kinda' nice, huh?

Stay tuned this week for the how-to on the map lamp shade!
